La bellezza del cinema asiatico
Scroll down for the English version
Oggi
“World Cinema”: termine utilizzato dal mondo anglofono per
descrivere la categoria composta dai film in lingua
straniera.

I

THE BEAUTY OF ASIAN CINEMA
Today we're addressing the theme of Asian cinema: it consists of all the films created in East, South and South-East Asia.
The Asian film industry and the films it produces are part of the "World Cinema": a term used by the English-speaking world to describe the category composed of foreign language films.
I have always wondered why almost nobody, at least in Italy, knew the wonder of the Asian world and cinema: first of all it is not "mainstream", that is, it is not the dominant trend; they are almost never dubbed and consequently have little exposure in cinemas. Since they are not dubbed, they can only be found in the original language with subtitles: unfortunately many still have a sort of aversion to subtitles. Bong Joon-Ho, a famous South Korean director, in his speech at the 2020 Golden Globes
he says, "Once you've passed the one-inch subtitle barrier , you'll be introduced to many more incredible films. You have to overcome this "fear" and stop depriving yourself of cinematic variety.

The themes covered in these films are very strong. One of them is nationalism, which shows the pride of customs and societies. Also ethnicity, in each film, is shown through native languages. Another fundamental theme is family, an omnipresent value in Asian culture.
Cinema is magic and allows us to open our minds, to enter countries other than our own, to understand diverse mentalities and cultures and to love them.
The era has arrived where, finally, the micro-cultures of Asia are seen by the world through the expert lens of the camera.
